of what we're going to do on this subject. the gun lobby, the nra at least, in some ways is a victim of their own success. their political m.o. is to prevent anybody from even bringing up gun control legislation, to make it seem politically impossible to even broach the subject. and so they're not used to having the debate, their side of the argument, with powerful, motivated, organized proponents of the opposite view. in other words, they have been so successful at shutting down any possible debate over gun control in this country that they now seem legitimately surprised that there might be a legitimate debate in this country over gun control. their reaction today to their meeting with vice president joe biden in washington was that they said they were disappointed. that was their word, "dispointed," that one of the subjects of discussion was reforming gun laws. what did you think you were there to talk about? this is the list of gun owner groups and gun advocacy groups that vice president biden met with today. in this ongoing series of meetings he's having toward producing a list

administration. the nra says its membership increased by more than 100,000 since the sandy hook shooting. attorney general holder is meeting with dick's sporting goods and walmart. white house is calling in heavy hitters to change public opinion including bill clinton who denounced the use of assault weapons and the administration has the strongest ally in gabby giffords, herself a victim of gun violence but the president has work cut out for him. nearly half of all americans oppose a ban or semiautomatic weapons including those in the federal assault weapons ban that expired near lay decade ago. so let's spin on all of this. i guess what this is building towards at least politically is the white house and allies want to try to isolate the nra, even on the right and within the republican party and so you have a meeting today with walmart, dick's sporting goods. they want to take, you know, groups like that, businesses like that, interests like that and sort of pit everyone, this sort of wide array against the nra and dare house republicans to side with this unpopular group. i'm a little

to the national rifle association. >> his office sent it to the nra? then less than a month after the oklahoma city bombing, on a day that had been proclaimed a national day of mourning for police killed in the line of duty, less than a month after the oklahoma city bombing, the nra took out a national newspaper ad defending a fund-raising letter that they had just sent which called federal law enforcement personnel jackbooted thugs. this is less than a month after the oklahoma city bombing. president george h.w. bush resigned his life membership in the nra in protest. ultimately, even after they first defended it, the nra was forced to apologize for the "jackbooted thugs" thing. and ultimately, old steve stockman did get voted out of office in texas in 1996. he'd only served one term in the house. but you know what happened to steve stockman in the long run? in this past election in 2012, the one we just had, steve stockman got voted back into office. texas decided to send him back. and then yeah, he was the guy who even before president obama said what he wanted to do on gun ref
